  • Population: 8,175,133
  • Persons per square mile: 27,012.5
  • Persons 65 years and over: 12.1%
  • Female persons: 52.5%
  • High school graduate or higher: 79.8%
  • Median household income: $52,259 (New York state: $58,003)
  • Persons below poverty level: 20.3%
  • Mean travel time to work: 39.2 minutes (many people don’t live in Manhattan)

New York: a Melting Pot

There is a reason why they call New York the “Melting Pot”! In essence what this means is that New York is a blend of different cultures, nationalities and ethnicities. Nearly 50% (48,8) of New Yorkers speak another language at home other than English!

The mix:

  • White: 44%
  • Hispanic or Latino: 28.6%
  • African American: 25.5%
  • Asian: 12,7%
  • Mixed: 4%
  • American Indian and Alaska Native: 0.7%
  • Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander: 0.1%
