Fotografiska in New York

Fotografiska in New York is a photography museum and an outpost of the renowned Fotografiska Museum in Stockholm. The New York City location opened in 2019 and shows some of the best photography in the world, both from emerging and established artists. The museum hosts many events and aims to be as much a hangout as a museum. Fotografiska NYC is open late, so it’s a great place to go in the evening, and you can even enjoy the artwork with a glass of wine in hand!

Exhibitions at Fotografiska New York

Fotografiska in New York is a bit of an unusual museum. The aim is to be more than “just” a place to view art and to give visitors a full experience. The museum has many events and the programming goes beyond photography with talks, workshops, fashion shows, DJ nights, poetry readings, wine tastings and much more.

Fotografiska doesn’t have any permanent exhibitions or collections. Instead, the museum hosts rotating exhibitions which allows it to showcase a broader range of works. This approach also makes it possible to react to current world events, making Fotografiska a very timely platform. The aim is to always have a broad selection of photography on display – from fashion and commercial work to fine art and documentary photography – to attract a wide audience. 5 different photo exhibitions are usually on at the time, and they are often changed, ensuring the museum is exciting for regular visitors as well.

The History Behind Fotografiska

Swedish brothers Jan and Per Broman grew up immersed in the world of photography. The brothers learned to create and develop images from an early age since their father was a darkroom manager for a newspaper and even built a darkroom at home. The passion for photography stuck, and in 2010 the Broman brothers founded the Fotografiska Museum in Stockholm, aiming to inspire a more conscious world through the power of photography. It quickly became a big draw, so the brothers decided to take the concept first to Tallinn, Estonia and then across the pond to New York.

Located in the Flatiron District, Fotografiska in New York is only a short walk from the Flatiron Building. The museum is in a historical building from 1894, formerly called Church Missions House. The six-floor Renaissance Revival building is a registered New York City landmark and is an impressive setting for Fotografiska New York’s multi-concept venue.
