Memphis is not only a famous city in the U.S. state of Tennessee, but now a musical on Broadway! Before the show came to Broadway is was shown at other locations in the U.S. , but now the show has played over 1000 times on Broadway New York!
The musical is loosely based on a real disk jockey, Dewey Phillips, in the Memphis of the fifties (a time when racism against African-American population mainly dominated) as one of the first white DJ’s to play black music. The show itself is about Huey. He is a novice DJ with a great love for all types of music. His career is threatened when he starts to play black music but soon more and more of these records are sold and the music is suddenly very popular among the general public. Meanwhile, Huey falls in love with the African-American singer Felicia and he wants to help her to record her own music. They feel the social pressure on their relationship and eventually try to achieve their dreams separately.
From the time Memphis played on Broadway, there was an immediate flood of positive responses. Both the New York Post and the Associated Press called the show “exuberant”, Associated Press added that the show is “sensual, soulful, melodic and theatrical, expertly cast and beautifully sung”. Newsday also writes that an “original, authentic, extraordinary show” with “non-stop talent, great songs and vocal firework.” The audience too is really talking about the musical, as it being “excellent”, and “the best show I’ve seen in a long time!”
