The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess on Broadway New York
If you think of Broadway, then you’re probably also think of George and Ira Gershwin. The brothers have become famous through the music and lyrics they wrote for several musicals and films. The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess on Broadway New York initially flopped – partly because of the criticisms of the story – but now there are numerous award-winning revivals of the show, and Porgy and Bess is known as a true Broadway classic.
The musical is set in South Carolina in the ’30s, and is about a seemingly impossible love. Bess is a beautiful woman with a past of drugs and violence that she tries to leave behind her. She tries to escape her past including her lover Crown. She gets help from an unexpected source: ultimately her rescue comes in the form of the beggar, Porgy, who ignores the opinions of others about Bess´s past . Together they rebel against the conservative ideas of the time with their romance.
Not only the musical itself, but some of the songs too have become real classics over the years; some of these songs are “It Is not Necessarily So”, “I Got Plenty Of Nothing” and probably the most famous of them all, “Summertime”.
As mentioned, the performance of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess on Broadway, although not initially welcomed with open arms, has now received many positive reviews in its current version. Especially the actors Audra McDonald and Norm Lewis are widely praised for the way they portray the characters Porgy and Bess. The New York Times calls McDonald “in one word: great ” both Bloomberg and the New Jersey Newsroom write that Lewis and McDonald make it a “must see” and the Associated Press calls the production “a brilliant version of the Gershwin masterpiece”.
