The 9/11 Ground Zero Museum Workshop in New York is a small museum that exhibits photographs and artefacts that were recovered from the attacks on September 11, 2001. After the attacks, people from the Fire Department New York (FDNY), among others, spent months cleaning up Ground Zero in New York. The founder of the workshop, Gary Marlon Suson, was the photographer at Ground Zero and saw many things up close. In the 9/11 Museum Workshop, he exhibits photos he took and items he found, which visitors can hold.

9/11 Ground Zero Museum Workshop

Founder Gary Marlon Suson was the official photographer of the FDNY at Ground Zero. This allowed him to take rare photographs and obtain special objects that visitors can see and hold in the 9/11 Workshop. The museum is inspired by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam; a small museum that gives insight into an event. In this case, an insight into the lives of the people of the FDNY and the recovery teams.

In this museum, located in the Meatpacking District, you can see pictures of firefighters and the dogs searching for victims, the PATH tunnels under Ground Zero and the “Honor Guard”, the ceremony when a colleague was found. During this search, they found many objects from the Twin Towers, which can now be seen in the Ground Zero museum. These items include the “Frozen Clock”, which shows the exact time that the first tower collapsed and a calendar found in the PATH station, which has “Today is September 11” on display. What makes the Ground Zero Workshop special is that you get to hold objects and that founder Gary is present to tell you more about his experience.

The museum in New York is best experienced by means of the interactive audio tour. It takes you past the photo and tells you when you can hold an item. You can also hear fragments that were recorded at Ground Zero. Think of barking dogs, trucks removing debris and prayers being recited.
