Book your JFK Airport to New Jersey Transfer before you travel to New York. If you are flying to JFK but are staying in New Jersey, you have quite the trip ahead of you. Depending on where you need to be in New Jersey, there are a number of options. You could take the train to Jersey City, for example, or book a private transfer in advance.

Transfer from JFK to New Jersey
There are several ways to get from JFK Airport to New Jersey. The best transfer option depends heavily on your hotel’s location and how many people are travelling with you. Some parts of New Jersey, like Hoboken and Jersey City, are closer to Manhattan and therefore better connected to JFK than other areas. Here are all the options for travelling to NJ:
Public transport
Public transport from JFK to New Jersey is the cheapest way to get to your accommodation. The exact route and mode of public transport depend on your destination, but you always start by taking the JFK AirTrain to either Jamaica or Howard Beach. From there, you change:
- to the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road), followed by an NJ Transit Train, or
- to a subway to Lower Manhattan, where you can transfer to the PATH train to NJ.
The quickest public transport option is usually AirTrain + LIRR + NJ Transit, which takes around 1-1.5 hours. While subway + PATH is cheaper, it can take slightly longer. The best route depends on where in New Jersey you need to go and whether your hotel is close to a PATH station.
However, all these options are quite complicated, as you have to change lines several times. Therefore I prefer different ways of transportation.
Taxi from JFK to New Jersey
I would not advise taking a cab from JFK to New Jersey because, as JFK is located in a different state than New Jersey, taxi drivers can charge a special rate. On top of that, they often drive through busy Manhattan, which can lead to fares as high as $170 – $220.
Private transfer
When staying in a New Jersey hotel, booking a car service from JFK to New Jersey beforehand is a better and more convenient option and, in most cases, cheaper than a taxi. You know the price (including toll and tips) before departure, and if you travel with more people, it’s an affordable option.
