Discover Unique New York on the Alternative Neighbourhoods Tour
Because you will travel by subway to get between the various stops, this doesn’t feel like a classic tour but like a local taking you to visit unique places in NYC. Along the way, your guide will tell you all about the history of these areas and show you points of interest.
The subway fares are not included in this guided tour, so you will need your own MetroCard. Order your MetroCard via my website before you leave for New York.
Hell’s Kitchen
The introduction to alternative New York begins in Hell’s Kitchen, a neighbourhood located in the heart of Manhattan. While it is now a vibrant area full of restaurants, in the past it was an Irish neighbourhood where you could also find many gangsters.
Harlem
Next, you will take the subway to Harlem, where you will visit various murals and street art, pass by the hotel where Fidel Castro stayed, and stop at a local coffee shop. You can get a behind-the-scenes look at this local business.
I thought this was a nice addition to the tour. I felt like I really got to know New York and its residents better.
The Bronx
From Harlem, you’ll head to The Bronx by subway. This is the home of the New York Yankees. You’ll pass their old stadium, among other things, and the guide will tell you more about this iconic baseball team.
Next, you will visit the Joker Stairs, the famous steps from the Joker movie. You will also visit a local business in the Bronx, a Dominican barbershop.
Brooklyn
After visiting The Bronx, you’ll take the subway to Fort Greene. It’s a neighbourhood in Brooklyn, known for its rich musical history. Here you’ll see a mural of hip-hop legend Biggie Smalls, among other things.
