Things to do and see in Bushwick

Bushwick in Brooklyn is a cool and quirky neighbourhood to take a stroll through, and there are a number of things that make Bushwick unique.

Bushwick Collective

Street art fans should not miss a trip to Bushwick. Many buildings in the neighbourhood are colourfully painted and form a giant open air art gallery. The Bushwick Collective is a well-known phenomenon in this Brooklyn neighbourhood. This project lets artists from around the world participate, providing them with a piece of wall where they can let their creative ideas flow.

The Bushwick Collective’s works are mostly found in the area around Wyckoff Avenue and St Nicholas Avenue. The temporary murals are replaced every year. Much of the street art is actually hidden in plain sight, so it’s a good idea to take a street art tour through Bushwick so you know where to look and can learn more about the impressive artwork.

Vintage Shopping in Bushwick

Bushwick in New York is a great place to go vintage shopping. There are countless shops where you can find unique items. Whether you’re looking for a special designer piece or just want to browse around, Bushwick is the place to be.

Atmosphere of Bushwick, Brooklyn

Bushwick was once the heart of beer brewing in America, but over the years Bushwick’s industrial setting has changed into an eclectic and artistic New York neighbourhood. The former warehouses have been transformed into shops and restaurants, whose outer walls are the canvas for street art. Because this neighbourhood is easily accessible via the subway from Manhattan, it is an attractive area to live in. Many young working people and artists have settled in Bushwick.

Dining in Bushwick

The best places to eat and drink in Bushwick are around Wyckoff Avenue on Troutman Street and Starr Street. The neighbourhood is particularly well-known for its Mexican cuisine. For example, the Tortilleria Mexicana Los Hermanos is a tortilla factory that opened as a restaurant after the popularity of its curbside food cart. Now you can watch the tortilla-making process from the cantina. It doesn’t get any fresher than that! I always go for a chorizo or beef filling, but there is also a vegetarian option available.

How to get to Bushwick

The best way to get to Bushwick is by subway. If you are interested in the street art of the Bushwick Collective, take the L line to Jefferson Street. If you want to explore the other side of Bushwick, take the M line to Knickerbocker Avenue or Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenue. Although the street art is best viewed during the day, the area may appear sleepy before most stores and restaurants open around midday or in the afternoon.
