The history of Madison Square Park

The park was not always such a cheerful place, though. At the end of the 18th century, for example, it was used as a burial ground for the poor and the unknown. It subsequently became an army depot and a training ground for soldiers.

In 1847, the place officially became a public park, named after President James Madison. In the years that followed, the neighbourhood grew to become the beating heart of the city. For example, the first Madison Square Garden stood here, and between 1876 and 1882, the arm and torch of the Statue of Liberty were displayed here.

The park today

Today, Madison Square Park is a green oasis in the heart of Manhattan. There is a large playground for children, and dog lovers can enjoy themselves at Jemmy’s Dog Run, where New York’s dogs can play. The park is also known for its changing art installations. Madison Square Park is also one of the best places to see the Flatiron Building.

Shake Shack

There’s a good chance you’ve heard of Shake Shack. The now world-famous burger chain started out in Madison Square Park in New York. You can still find the little kiosk there that opened in 2004. It’s the perfect place to pick up a tasty ShackBurger and a milkshake, and then eat them somewhere in the park.

Things to do around Madison Square Park

As Madison Square Park is situated right in the heart of Manhattan, there are plenty of options nearby. Just across Broadway, there is Eataly. In this large Italian food hall, you’ll find fresh pizzas, gelato, espresso and much more. You can do your shopping there, pick up some takeaway or grab a bite to eat in one of the small restaurants.

Or visit the Harry Potter Store just behind the Flatiron Building. It’s a paradise for any fan, and there’s so much to see here. Are you more of a fan of Friends? Then do take a look at the recreated set at the FRIENDS Experience, which is just a few blocks from the park.
