The Magic Flute in New York

The Magic Flute is the Metropolitan Opera’s annual Christmas show in New York. In this Christmas production, the opera has been shortened from over 3 hours to 1 hour and 50 minutes. This makes the opera an excellent choice for a first opera experience, and it’s also fun to attend with children. Die Zauberflöte is originally a German opera, now translated into English, so it’s easier to follow. In addition to the singing, there’s also dialogue during the performance.

Eric’s Tip: “There is a small screen in front of each seat that displays all the lyrics. This can make following the opera easier. The script is available in English, German, and Spanish.”

The Metropolitan Opera’s Die Zauberflöte

The Magic Flute takes place in a mythical world between the sun and the moon. The opera tells the story of Prince Tamino, who is caught up in a drama about what is good and what is evil. The Queen of the Night commissions him to save her daughter Pamina from Sarastro’s malevolent clutches. Tamino falls in love the moment he sees a picture of her.

Tamino soon discovers that the roles are the opposite; it is the Queen of the Night who is evil and that is why Pamina has fled. Knowing this, he decides to join Sarastro, just as Pamina did. To join, he must make a pledge not to speak or eat. Tamino maintains this behaviour even when he sees Pamina. Her heart breaks as she doesn’t understand his coldness. Will Tamino be able to prove her wrong and express his love for her?
