London City Airport

London City Airport is an international airport, it is located in the Royal Docks in the London Borough of Newham. It is approximately 7 miles (11 km) east of the City of London. London City is the fifth-busiest airport, there is only one terminal at this airport so travel is quicker than at other London airports. Several major airlines operate flights to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA).

The average flight time from London City to New York is just over 7 hours. However, this depends on factors such as weather conditions and which airline you fly with.

There are no direct flights to New York from London City so you will have to transfer at least once during your journey. The price of airline tickets to New York changes depending on the time of year. If you book on time and avoid travelling during busier months then you can find return tickets for around £420 from London City airport. Flexibility is also a key to save money on flights.

The most expensive periods are the summer months and the end of the year (with the holiday season including Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve) in New York. To get the best rates, I advise trying to book your flight at least 6 months in advance.

Directions to the airport

There are several ways to get to London City, which you can find more information about below.

  • Underground: you can get the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to London City Airport. Services run every eight to 15 minutes. Fares on the DLR are the same as those on the Tube.
  • Car: you can take your own car or grab a taxi. You can ask the driver or cab company how much your journey will cost beforehand.
  • Bus: local bus routes serving the airport are the 473 (Stratford, Silvertown, North Woolwich, and Prince Regent DLR Station) and the 474 (Canning Town, North Woolwich and East Beckton via Silvertown). Standard bus fares apply. Oyster and Travelcards are accepted.
